News

“Seaweed farming in our space is best carried out by means of women,” says Mwanaisha Makame, a 20-year veteran of the trade, as heat little waves lap at her lengthy, flower-print skirt. Ms. Makame’s circle of relatives didn’t have cash for upper schooling when she was once younger, so she went to the sea to farm. Seaweed farming has enabled hundreds of Zanzibari women to earn money and climb social ladders.
